GIRLS
NEW CASTLE — Williamsburg survived early foul trouble to Levada Gorsuch and LeeAnna Royer and knocked off previously unbeaten Union, 49-33, in the first round of the girls basketball PIAA Class 1A tournament on Saturday.
Royer scored a game-high 18 points and added 13 rebounds as Williamsburg avenged a loss from the 2023 state playoffs. Gorsuch added 17 points and seven rebounds despite missing most of the first half with three fouls.

Bishop Guilfoyle Academy had no trouble in their first step in defending its Class 1A state title with a victory over Clarion-Limestone on Saturday at the Pleasant Valley Gymnasium.
The Lady Marauders, which led 42-10 at halftime to get the running clock moving in the second half, forced the Lady Lions into 18 turnovers in the first half. Morgan Ruggery led BG with 16 points for the afternoon.
BG will face Aquinas Academy on Wednesday in the second round. Aquinas Academy beat Fannett-Metal, 65-22, on Saturday.
Hollidaysburg 43, Indiana 34
HOLLIDAYSBURG — Hollidaysburg went on a 12-0 run in the fourth quarter and erased a four-point deficit en route to a 43-34 first-round PIAA Class 5A playoff win at home over Indiana.

Jillian Sidney’s lone basket of the game, a 3-pointer from the right side of the key, gave the Lady Tigers the lead for good with 3:52 remaining.
Bella Vent led Hollidaysburg (24-3) with 16 points and Lauren Stevenson added 12. The Lady Tigers will play the York Suburban-Bethel Park winner Wednesday in the second round.
Northern Bedford 47, Mount Calvary Christian 35
LOYSBURG — The Northern Bedford girls basketball team advanced to the second round of the PIAA Class 1A state playoffs thanks to a win over Mount Calvary Christian.
Alyssa Yeatts’ 18 points were tops for the Lady Panthers, who had to fight back from a 20-11 second-quarter deficit to earn their 13th win this season.

NBC will play DELCO Christian on Wednesday in the second round. DELCO defeated New Covenant Christian on Saturday.
Bishop Carroll 77, Coudersport 32
EBENSBURG — Bishop Carroll buried 11 3-pointers and forced Coudersport into 24 turnovers in racing to a home victory Saturday afternoon in the first round of the PIAA Class 1A playoffs.
Sophomores Adelyn Myers (24 points, four 3-pointers) and Ava Pablic (20 points, five 3-pointers) combined for 44 points and nine 3-pointers for the Lady Huskies, who will take on District 10 champ Farrell in the second on Wednesday.
North Catholic 59, Penn Cambria 29
CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP — Penn Cambria’s season ended abruptly Saturday in the PIAA playoffs with a 30-point loss at North Catholic.
The District 6, Class 4A runner-up Panthers finished the year 12-12. Brady Wehner scored 13 points, Sam Weir added 12 and North Catholic dominated Penn Cambria to advance to the second round on Wednesday against District 10 champ Harbor Creek.
Sarah Loughry also scored in double figures with 10 points for the Trojans (23-4), the WPIAL’s third-place team.
North Catholic, which connected on eight 3-point shots, sprinted to a 34-12 halftime lead and ran off 15 consecutive points in the third quarter before Penn Cambria scored again with 1:52 left in the period.
Senior Addy Hite led Penn Cambria with eight points.
Lady Lions’, Lady Red Devils’ second-round destinations announced
The Altoona and Central Cambria girls basketball teams will hit the road for second-round action in the PIAA tournaments this week.
In Class 6A, The Lady Lions will face District 1 runner-up Garnet Valley at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mechanicsburg High School. In Class 3A, the Lady Red Devils will meet District 9 champion Karns City at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Armstrong High School in Kittanning.
Back in District 6 on Tuesday night, the Altoona Fieldhouse will host a Class 5A boys matchup at 6 p.m. between District 3 third-place finisher West York and WPIAL runner-up Peters Township. Bald Eagle Area High School will host second-round action in Class 1A boys between LaAcademia Charter from District 3 and Cameron County from District 9.
Tickets for second round games go on sale beginning at 4 p.m. Sunday.
BOYS
Bishop Guilfoyle 57, Bishop Canevin 38
Riding a balanced attack that featured three players in double figures, Bishop Guilfoyle Academy won its PIAA Class 3A first round playoff game over Bishop Canevin Saturday at Pleasant Valley Gymnasium.
Hamilton Gates scored a game-high 17 points, while Nick Foor added 15 and Taurean Consiglio chipped in 13 for BG (23-4), which will meet WPIAL champion South Allegheny Wednesday at a site and time to be determined. South Allegheny advanced with a 75-37 win over Cranberry on Saturday.
Drew Allen led Canevin (15-12), with 17 points, while Lamier Wade added 10.
Northgate 71, Portage 69
PORTAGE — Portage rallied to tie the game in the closing seconds, but a putback layup by Northgate’s Kadenne Kemp at the buzzer gave the Flames a 71-69 win over the Mustangs in a PIAA Class 2A first round matchup Saturday afternoon.
“I couldn’t have asked for more effort and belief in each other in what we just witnessed,” Portage coach Travis Kargo said. “I give our kids a ton of credit for battling. They didn’t give up and they didn’t give in. We did everything we could.”
Northgate held a 10-point lead at halftime and opened the third with seven consecutive points to lead, 40-23.
Trinity 80, Penn Cambria 52
CAMP HILL — No matter how Penn Cambria coach Jim Ronan tried in practice to mimic Trinity in preparation for Saturday’s first round game of the PIAA Class 3A playoffs at Trinity Catholic High School, it was nothing compared to the reality.
The Panthers ran into the buzzsaw that is the Shamrocks. Penn Cambria (14-11) couldn’t stop Trinity’s relentless offensive and defensive pressure.
