HOLLIDAYSBURG — Hollidaysburg girls basketball coach Deanna Jubeck had seen the play unfold many times before.
She wasn’t surprised one bit when Lauren Stevenson fed a streaking Bella Vent for an easy fast-break layup Friday night with 37.2 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Vent’s layup put her over 1,000 points for her career.
She went on to score a game-high 22 as the Lady Tigers pushed their winning streak to 16 games with a dominating 64-38 Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference victory over Bishop Carroll on senior night.
“That’s special,” Jubeck said. “That caps a great four years for a kid who has been resilient, and for her to be able her 1,000th point, that’s just a huge victory not only for her, but for her teammates.
“She got that on a very unselfish play from Lauren Stevenson and it speaks volumes for a kid that is a point guard.”
Vent, an IUP recruit, entered the game needing five points to reach the century mark. She finished with 1,017, including three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.
“It was a little nerve-racking being that it’s senior night, but I pulled it together,” said Vent, a three-year starter. “It was nice to get (the milestone) out of the way early.
“Lauren gave herself so I could score, and I am thankful for that.”
Hollidaysburg (18-1, 16-0 LHAC) got plenty of offensive support as juniors Makenna Weimert (18 points) and Clare Padamonsky (12) reached double figures.
Bishop Carroll (13-5, 10-4) jumped to a 3-0 lead on Madison Delauter’s 3-pointer 10 seconds into the game, but the Lady Tigers went on a 13-0 run and never trailed again en route to snapping the Lady Huskies’ six-game winning streak.
Delauter and Ava Pablic scored 11 points each for Bishop Carroll and Adelyn Myers added 10.
Junior Alana Lightner, a transfer from Bishop Guilfoyle, finally made her long-awaited debut for the Lady Tigers, who are No. 4 in Class 5A in the latest Tribune-Review girls state basketball rankings.
Lightner, a starter on last season’s Bishop Guilfoyle PIAA Class 1A championship team, hadn’t appeared in a game since last March due to a stress fracture in her right foot.
She had the boot removed two weeks ago and played five minutes off the bench.
“It feels amazing — I hadn’t played since the state championship game,” Lightner said. “I have been waiting for this moment for a long time.
“It’s been super frustrating, but I am grateful to be back.”
Lightner, a 5-9 forward, gives the Lady Tigers some depth inside heading into the playoffs.
“Right now, she is on a time limit as she comes back to make sure we have her in game shape,” Jubeck said. “It’s just one more body that is going to be able to battle for us. It adds another person to the rotation who can help us on both ends.”
The Lady Tigers honored their three seniors — Vent, Stevenson and Alissa Heim — in a pregame ceremony.
Vent said she’s excited to see Lightner “play more, and score some points and really help us out down the stretch.”
