LAKEWOOD, Wash — A suspect is in custody after an hourslong standoff with police in Lakewood Wednesday afternoon.
The suspect was taken into custody before 6 p.m. No one was injured during the incident, according to the Lakewood Police Department.
Police ordered some residents in Lakewood to evacuate Wednesday morning after shots were fired near a business.
The Lakewood Police Department said in a Facebook post at about 10:30 a.m. that people in the area of 110th Street and 25th Avenue South needed to leave the area. As of 6 p.m., police are still asking people to avoid the area as it is still an “active scene.”
Police said they were called to Pick and Pull at 2416 112th Street South just after 9 a.m. for a suspicious person.
According to police, the possible burglary suspect scaled a fence topped with razor wire onto Joint Base Lewis-McChord property and ran through a field toward a business. Investigators said the suspect fled into the business, and shots were fired just after 9:20 a.m. The people inside the business fled, police said.
Investigators believed the suspect was the only person inside the building during the negotiations. The standoff lasted for roughly 9 hours.
