BISMARCK, N.D. (KUMV) – House lawmakers voted to kill a resolution that would have put the legalization of sports betting on the ballot in 2026.
It failed in a 24-to-70 vote. The House Judiciary Committee recommended not passing it.
It would have allowed people to bet on professional and college sports with taxes going towards the benefit of K-12 education.
Opponents cited testimony from student organizations and college officials concerned about creating gambling addictions and harmful rhetoric against college athletes.
Supporters said it should have been left to the people to decide.
Sports betting is legal at tribal casinos.
