Colorado State University Pueblo is offering two fun workshops starting in February through its Chicano/a Studies program.
The workshops are open to the public. The courses can count toward a continuing education credit for teachers or can be taken as a one-credit course for students seeking a degree.
The first workshop, Ballet Folklorico, is set for 3:30 p.m., Feb. 7-9. The workshop will explore the profound significance of Mexican folkloric dance within a multicultural community, examining its value and impact on personal and cultural identity.
The course offers a comprehensive study of Mexican folkloric dance, with a focus on its cultural, historical, and regional importance. The workshop will be taught by Iskra Dafne Merino, director of the CSU Pueblo Ballet Folkorico program.
The Alternative Chicano Press workshop is set for 10 a.m. March 1, 8, and 15. The hands-on workshop will cover the historical and cultural implications of Chicano-centered media and the representation of the Chicano/a community within news and media. This workshop will be taught by Juan Espinosa, editor of La Cucaracha, an online Chicano newspaper, and will explore traditional Chicano media practices and new digital platforms.
The workshops will be offered at a cost of $60. Sign up online. For details, contact Matthew Garcia, new Chicano/a Studies coordinator, at 719-549-2835, or matthew.garcia@csupueblo.edu.

The Colorado Department of the Treasury is accepting applications for the Colorado Property Tax Deferral program through April 1, 2025.
The program allows eligible homeowners to pay back property taxes with a low-interest loan.
“With higher costs for groceries, insurance, and other necessities, we know many residents are struggling to pay their property taxes on time,” said Colorado State Treasurer Dave Young. “The Colorado Property Tax Deferral program is a critical financial tool to keep thousands of Coloradans housed and provide families with much-needed relief.”
The program is open to seniors ages 65 and up, active military service members, and all homeowners whose property taxes have grown by 4% or more during the last two tax years.
Puebloans can check their eligibility and apply for a loan after receiving the latest county tax bill. Apply online at colorado.propertytaxdeferral.com.
