Jordan Piselli of Williamsport can dominate a match with ease. He did so in both his first two matches at Saturday’s PHAC Championships at Milton High School. But he told his teammate after his semifinal victory that he likes the close, gritty matches moreso.
It’s what made him fall in love with the sport of wrestling.
So Piselli wasn’t mad he had to battle for key points in two close decision wins in the semifinals and finals at 107 pounds. He was glad it came down to that and he came out on top.
In the semifinals, the Millionaire ohad a huge win against state-ranked Branden Eisenhour, ranked No. 9 in the state at 107, and outlasted him for a narrow 7-6 win to advance to the first-place finals. Once wrestling for the title, Piselli grinded out another big match.
Piselli beat Southern Columbia’s Rowen Humphrey by decision, 2-0, in a match where not only were points hard to come by, but the margin for error and letting Humphrey counter was near zero.
“A lot of more patience form neutral, not trying to rush to the shots. I saw that in some of my other matches where I was diving and they sort of got the better of me there. The key 0-0 neutral won the match and the reversal pushed it right past,” Piselli said.
Piselli noted that he’s always looking to blow people out in dominating fashion, but knew that doing so against Humphrey wouldn’t be easy to do.
“I figured he did pretty well throughout the bracket and it would be a tough one,” Piselli said.
And that it was.
But, Piselli loves those tough, close matches. It makes him better as a wrestler and a competitor.
“I think the tough matches are honestly the reason I do the sport. I said to one of my teammates right after the semis, they’re the most fun out of anything I’ve ever done,” Piselli said. “The tough, close matches are not as good for glory, but they’re way more in the moment and more fun.”
Piselli noted that he didn’t see a lot of success earlier this year in various tournaments, so he was glad ot come out with a title at a tough PHAC Championships in the 107-pound bracket. He also sees the PHAC Championships being a good tune-up for the postseason, which is only a few weeks away.
“It’s nice to see I can still compete against who was placing higher than me in those other tournaments and still be up there,” Piselli said.
Piselli was Williamsport’s only first-place finisher on Saturday at the PHAC Championships. Williamsport’s Lauger Waldman pinned Casey Mook of Hughesville at 121 in the fifth-place finals and Collin Nasdeo finished sixth at 127 after taking a forfeit loss.
“We don’t always have it, especially last year we had a really small team, but it’s nice to see a lot of my teammates up on the podium,” Piselli noted.
