BUFFALO, N.Y. — It’s playoff season in the NFL, which means high stakes not only on the field, but also on your phone.
“Certainly football has always been a bet on sport, especially the Super Bowl. But with the onset of mobile sports betting being legalized in New York State, we’ve seen a really significant uptick in people reaching out for help, specifically for their mobile sports betting issues,” said Angela DiRosa, program manager with the New York State Problem Gambling Resource Center.

According to the most recent report from the New York State Gaming Association, more than $19 billion was wagered via licensed mobile sports wagering operators in 2023.
But gamblers aren’t the only ones cashing in. According to the same report, New York State raked in more than $862 million in tax revenue as a result.
DiRosa says that while most will be able to gamble without issue, there are some tell tale signs as to when there may be a problem.
“Being transparent with loved ones about what you’re doing and how much you’re engaging in this can be helpful to have some accountability there. And certainly, if you’re feeling like you’re becoming more anxious about the games, or how much you’re wagering, or you find yourself preoccupied, it might be time to take a pause, find something else to do, step away from your mobile device and engage in other activities, to take a break,” DiRosa said.
If you or someone you know may be experiencing a gambling problem, there is help.
