New Orleans real estate firm The McEnery Company said Tuesday it is expanding its north shore residential brokerage arm with the acquisition of The Morse Team, which has been the core RE/MAX franchise in Covington for more than two decades.
McEnery, which offers brokerage, valuation, project management and consulting, has been expanding its boutique residential brokerage business over the last year. The moves come amid upheaval in the real estate industry, which has included changes to the way fees are levied as well as technology that has made some of the work done by agents redundant.
Last year, Compass’ real estate arm bought local brokerage group Latter & Blum as part of an effort to acquire regional real estate outfits and become “the Uber of real estate,” as the industry becomes more tech-focused and commoditized.
Parke McEnery, who runs the business founded by his father, Peter in 1980, has said his firm’s answer to the consolidation is to “double down on local,” by which he means combining with longstanding local brokers with deep knowledge of their turf rather than joining a national group.
Last year, McEnery bought the Delery Comarda brokerage, which operates primarily in Old Metairie, Lakewood, Lakeview and Lakeshore.
The Morse Team was founded by Kay Morse in the mid-1980s and the RE/MAX franchise she acquired two decades ago was run for the last few years by her daughters, Candy Morse Modeen and Melody Morse Barousse.
Modeen said they had 16 agents in the operation last year but she and her sister and niece, Kate Barousse Friedman, decided that with all the changes afoot they would rather concentrate on brokering real estate than on managing a larger office.
“It’s a fast-changing industry and the realization for us is that we felt like we were at a point where we needed to pick whether we wanted to run brokerage or real estate team,” said Modeen.
Joining up with McEnery will allow them to use their knowledge of the north shore market to concentrate on buying and selling properties. “This is our community, we have a lot of roots here in Covington,” said Moodeen.
With the addition of The Morse Team, McEnery’s staff will grow to 106 in total from 85 after the Delery acquisition last spring.
