The race is on to fill the department of public works commissioner seat on the Saratoga Springs City Council. The city is holding a special election on Jan. 28 to fill the remainder of a vacancy.
Republican Chuck Marshall declared his candidacy to succeed Jason Golub, who stepped down last year. Marshall will appear on the ballot.
"We’re going to eliminate downtown paid parking because the treasure that Saratoga is not a treasure if there’s vacancy along Broadway, and then finally were going to make infrastructure improvements," Marshall said. "I don’t think anyone is more qualified to fix the drainage along Gilbert Road than I am, and I look forward to bringing that experience to Saratoga and the City Council."
Democrats selected Hank Kuczynski, who was appointed interim public works commissioner in October and is running as a write-in candidate. Kuczynski said he did not intend to run, but felt that an election with with one candidate didn’t feel right.
"The Democratic Party asked me to be a write in candidate," he said. "As a person who believes in democracy, I had to say ‘yes’ so people have a choice."
The Saratoga County Board of Elections released important voter dates and information for the special election here.
