DIXON, CA (MPG) – The New Year is officially in full swing, and with students back in school, many might be restless after a collective two weeks of free time. For the more athletically-oriented students, there are plenty of interesting and fun opportunities worth checking out.
Dixon Girls Softball is a nonprofit youth sports organization with a dedication to teaching softball fundamentals and life skills through sportsmanship, leadership, positive coaching and peer-to-parent communication. The nonprofit hosts regular clinics on pitching, catching and slapping, as well as fundraisers at popular local restaurants to remain a fixture in the community while supporting the talented young women.
Regular registration ended as of Jan. 1. The last day for late registration is Jan. 15 for $250. For more information, visit dixongirlssoftball.com.
Established in 2006, Solo Rugby Club’s primary objective is to develop players with strong character. The core values that these players should embody involve lessons of teamwork, commitment, loyalty, honor, integrity, pride, selflessness, self-sacrifice, hard work and personal responsibility. Formerly the Dixon Rugby Football Club, the organization now reaches youth throughout Solano and Yolo counties.

Two rugby camps were held Dec. 7 and 21, 2024, at Hall Park, 285 E Chestnut St. At no cost and with no prior experience necessary, third- to 12th-grade boys and girls were able to learn the basics and have a great time. According to the organization’s website, more rugby camps are on the way and regular practices are in the scheduling process. Until spring fully takes hold, the chill of winter will persist. For those looking for a new way to stay active during the colder months, Winter Indoor Pickleball will be available every Saturday, from Jan. 4 to March 1. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., interested parties can visit John Knight Middle School, 455 E A St. and play on any of the open courts for $5 at the door. Basketball, wrestling, soccer and even dance are currently in season at the school level but for those who wish to try something new, these opportunities could become new hobbies.
