SHADYSIDE – Even Mother Nature’s frigid temperatures couldn’t cool off red-hot Caldwell Tuesday night.
The visiting Redskins (9-0) received 41 points from Carter Wheeldin (21) and Dylan Schott (20) in roaring past Shadyside, 74-29, in boys’ basketball action inside the Tigers Den.
The waning minutes of the third quarter and the entire fourth quarter were played with a running clock per OHSAA rules. Once the difference in score reaches 35 points, the clock runs continuously, with several exceptions.
“We came into the game wanting to key (defensively) on No. 1 and No. 5. Who scored most of their points?” veteran Shadyside head coach Ed Andes asked. “No. 1 did an outstanding job on the outside and No. 5 was a terror on the glass. He just got rebound after rebound after rebound.
“It seemed like the two kids beat us by themselves. What was it? 41-29. It felt like it,” Andes added. “We’re trying to guard two guys and they score like that.”
Guiler Preston netted eight of his 10 points off the bench in the first quarter and Schott added seven as Caldwell held a 23-12 advantage after one quarter. The Redskins snapped a 5-all deadlock with an 18-6 run and never looked back.
Shadyside committed eight of its 22 turnovers in the second quarter when the Redskins pulled away with a 17-0 spurt that built the margin to 45-14 as Wheeldin had eight points and five rebounds during the stretch.
The Tigers would only score 11 points in the second half.
Caldwell received 50 points from its starting five and 24 off the bench

Wheeldin completed his double-double with a dozen rebounds.
Shadyside is idle until Saturday when it visits Bellaire.
