A massive fire gutted the Morgan City Salvage building in Lacey’s Spring Monday night.
When the call went out, crews from seven area fire departments responded.
“The business was about a third involved by the time we got here,” said Captain Jeff Burns, Brindlee Mountain Fire Department. Firefighters had the fire 90-95% contained by 8:30pm. The debris was so dense, though, that crews were not able to go inside. The fire forced them to battle it from the outside.
“Heavy, heavy fireload,” said Burns. “A lot of stuff inside. It makes it harder, and it spread pretty quick. It got involved, so we had to go to a defensive operation and spray. We have Arab Ladder and Tri County Truck Ladder here, helped out a lot, and we sprayed from the top. It got to the second story fast, and it burnt through the roof, so it allowed us to put the water down from the topside.”
Crews worked overnight to spray hotspots and prevent others from popping up. Traffic on Highway 231 was down to one lane in each direction but was moving smoothly.
“We do know that everyone’s accounted for,” said Burns. “There are no injuries in there. We did have a medical issue outside the scene. Somebody in a car was passed out. We got them transported. Nobody’s injured, though.”
Burns says they can’t tell yet what caused the fire. Investigators will determine that after crews extinguish all of the hotspots.
