What a difference 72 hours can make in the sports world. As of Friday morning, Kyle Tucker was a linchpin in the Astros lineup, the Rockets were headed to the final four of the in-season NBA Cup tournament, and the Texans were on the cusp of a division championship but were going to need a little help.
However, the first domino to fall was the Astros trading Tucker later on Friday to the Chicago Cubs for third baseman Isaac Paredes, pitcher Hayden Wesneski, and prospect Cam Smith.
Then, on Saturday, the Rockets fell in their NBA Cup semifinal match against the Oklahoma City Thunder 111-96. The Rockets held a one-point lead at halftime, but the Thunder dominated the second half scoring 70 points.
And, on Sunday, the Texans became the AFC South champions after defeating the Miami Dolphins 20-12. That, coupled with an Indianapolis Colts loss later in the day, clinched the division title again for the Texans. Houston won despite only 181 yards of total offense with 17 of the team’s 20 points coming off of turnovers.
In the audio above, we discuss all three developments with Jeff Balke, co-host of the Bleav in Astros podcast and a writer for the Houston Press.
