In a game that was hyped as a Super Bowl preview, one team looked super, and one team was impressive just by holding on amid a rash of injuries.
The Bills went to Detroit and absolutely dominated the Lions’ depleted defense, jumping out to an early lead and never giving it up in a game they won 48-42. Josh Allen looked like the MVP favorite that he is, and the Lions’ injury-ravaged defense couldn’t do a thing about it.
It was the NFL’s highest-scoring game this season, passing last week’s Bills-Rams game.
For the Bills, the win shows clearly that they’re a team to be reckoned with down the stretch, even if it’s a long shot that they can catch the Chiefs for the No. 1 seed in the AFC. As long as Allen is healthy, the Bills are going to be a very tough team to beat in the playoffs — even if the road to the Super Bowl in the AFC goes through Kansas City. Allen passed for 362 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 68 yards and two touchdowns.
But will the road to the Super Bowl in the NFC go through Detroit? All season it has looked that way, but now it’s less certain. The Lions’ defense has been absolutely ravaged by injuries, and at this point they’re basically rolling out practice squad-quality players on defense. Jared Goff was excellent, throwing for 494 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions, but the Lions’ defense is a MASH unit.
At 12-2, the Lions are still the top team in the NFC. But the 11-3 Bills are healthier, and at this moment have to feel better about their chances of winning it all.
