Former service employees’ union staffer Joey Brenner will cover the union’s Central Region while current assistant region director Anna Nowlan will oversee the Eastern U.S.

The International Cinematographers Guild has found two new regional directors: Joey Brenner and Anna Nowlan.
The IATSE Local, which represents roughly 10,000 crew members in the camera department and publicists in collective bargaining, announced on Tuesday that it was appointing Brenner to head the central region and Nowlan to lead its eastern region.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Joey and Anna into their new roles,” ICG national executive director Alex Tonisson said in a statement. “They are both passionate about representing our members and the need for a strong labor movement in the entertainment industry.”

Brenner and Nowlan will join Western Region director Michaella “Micki” Bursalyan, whose hire from the Service Employees International Union was announced earlier this year. Nowlan is succeeding John Amman, who recently retired after 33 years with the union, in his last year as its Eastern Region director.
Brenner comes to the cinematographers’ union from SEIU-Florida Public Services Union in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he served as the organization’s director of organizing and bargaining, overseeing staff and managing contract negotiations. He has worked in organized labor for over a decade, according to the union. “With such a long history in the labor movement, we’re excited about the skills, experience and expertise Joey will bring to our organization,” 1st national vice president Deborah Lipman said in a statement.
Nowlan is being promoted from her current role as the union’s assistant Eastern Region director. Raised by a labor-leader mother (with UNITE HERE), Nowlan worked as a community organizer and as a campaign worker for Barack Obama’s reelection in 2012 before she joined the International Cinematographers Guild as a business representative in 2019. “In her years with the union, Anna has fought tirelessly for our Eastern Region members and our membership as a whole,” national vice president Chris Silano said in a statement. “She is an integral part of our community, and I’m thrilled to welcome her into her new role.”
Born out of a merger of three separate IATSE Locals in 1996, the International Cinematographers Guild has become IATSE’s largest Local, negotiating and enforcing contracts for the camera department — cinematographers, camera operators, loaders and digital imaging technicians, among others — and a select set of publicists.
