OCONOMOWOC — The restaurant planned to replace Coco’s Seafood and Steakhouse in downtown Oconomowoc will no longer be opening.
The social media pages for 72 Waverly are no longer active and the website for the restaurant now says “Delayed until further notice. We are going to change things up and ask for your patience as we figure out new chapters.”
An automatic response was received in response to an email to John Levine, who was opening 72 Waverly with his wife, Crystal Jones. Levine had been the head chef at Coco’s. The email message reads, “Unfortunately I have decided to go a different direction at the present moment and not proceed with 72 Waverly in Oconomowoc. I know how this looks and I am severely apologetic. We hope to bring 72 back to life in one shape or another in near future. However there are no further updates at this time. I am also no longer with Coco’s effective immediately. This mailbox will be monitored and certain correspondence will be contacted directly. Thank you!”
In an email, Levine clarified that he “decided to part ways with opening 72 Waverly at that location in Oconomowoc. I am looking to reform 72 Waverly into a smaller concept currently.” He added that he is not sure what will happen with Coco’s because he has parted ways with the company. Also, he said money was given to the owners of Coco’s for the total amount of gift card purchases for 72 gift cards.
Kari Whittaker, who owned Coco’s with her husband, Todd, said they are “making way for something new and have communicated to our staff that we will remain closed.”
Whittaker said gift card purchases will be honored once the business has reopened.
“We are excited about the new venture that is to come and will share more in the coming months,” she said.
Levine was planning to open the restaurant at 151 St. Paul St. today. He had created a new menu focused on farm-to-table and elevated small dishes. An executive chef, Tim Jordan, had also been hired.
