The 49ers have picked up a young defensive player off waivers, likely with an eye toward next season.
Via Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, the 49ers claimed cornerback Tre Avery off of waivers on Monday.
The Titans had waived Avery late last week.
In his third season after joining Tennessee as an undrafted free agent out of Rutgers, Avery has appeared in 38 games with five starts. He’s recorded 22 passes defensed and one fumble recovery.
Avery played almost exclusively on special teams for the Titans in 2024, but was a rotational player for the club on defense in 2022 and 2023.
