Scottie Scheffler, the 2022 green jacket winner and No. 1 golfer in the world, holds a one stroke lead on the field entering the final holes of play at Augusta National Golf Club as he seeks to become just the seventh man to win twice at the Masters in a three-year span.
Scheffler is hotter than any golfer right now, but he has competition atop the leaderboard with the top five in the field entering Round 4 separated by a single stroke. Collin Morikawa posted one of Saturday's most impressive rounds on his way into contention as he seeks to complete the third leg of a career grand slam. Max Homa mostly held serve during a competitive round while looking to break through with his first major. And then there's Ludvig Åberg, 24, who surged into contention and now has the chance to become the first golfer to win the Masters in his debut performance at a major.
Elsewhere, Tiger Woods came off setting a new Masters made cuts record by shooting his worst round at a major as a professional. He is nowhere close to contention, but given his goal to play all four majors this season, there's an opportunity for him to gain legitimate momentum should he close out his 72 holes at Augusta National in style.
Watch the 2024 Masters live on CBS from 2-7 p.m. ET and streaming all day Sunday with Masters Live as we follow the best golfers in the world through Augusta National with Featured Groups, check in at the famed Amen Corner and see leaders round the turn on holes 15 & 16. He gets up-and-down from the greenside bunker on No. 3 to add his first birdie of the day and get to 8 under. He is now two clear of Max Homa and Collin Morikawa who has had three straight good birdie looks fall by the wayside.
Scheffler starts par-par. He hit his tee shot in the bunker on No. 2 and missed the green with a really bad wedge shot, but it didn't matter. He rolls in his par putt and Collin Morikawa misses his birdie bid. The lead stays at 7 under, but Scheffler's iron play is not where we usually see it. He came into the round 25th in strokes gained approach through 54 holes.
This was to be expected with the hole locations. The movement that was lacking on Saturday is alive and well today. Bryson DeChambeau starts 5-5-5 to drop to 1 under while Ludvig Aberg and Max Homa both make birdie on the par-5 2nd to get to 5 and 6 under respectively.
That may be a big putt early. Scottie Scheffler makes his par putt from 4 feet to maintain his one-stroke lead over Collin Morikawa. The iron play hasn't been his best, but the short game is leading the way. He got up-and-down and Morikawa missed his 20-foot birdie bid. They head to the par-5 2nd with the vintage funnel pin on the right side.
There is some serious history on the line in the final pairing. Scottie Scheffler, the best player in the world, looks for his second green jacket in the last three years and in his first five Masters. Collin Morikawa looks for the third leg of the career grand slam in only his 17th major appearance. Two 27 year olds. Two major champions. Going to be fun to watch.
Oh, baby, the former Open champion is lurking. After a nice scrambling par on No. 1, Cameron Smith makes an eagle on No. 2 thanks to a hole-out from the greenside bunker. He has been stellar around Augusta National in his career and was Scottie Scheffler's closest pursuer in 2022. He is 3 under and four back as the penultimate pair tee off.

© 2004-2024 CBS Interactive. All Rights Reserved.
CBS Sports is a registered trademark of CBS Broadcasting Inc.
