World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Max Homa and 2020 U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau all enter the day tied at 6 under after 36 holes, and surely, all three men are hoping to separate themselves from the pack ahead of the tournament's final 18 holes Sunday.
Scheffler is hotter than any golfer on the PGA Tour right now, and he's only proven that to be the case at Augusta National where he ranks first from tee to green through 36 holes this week. Homa, meanwhile, ranks first in greens in regulation, while DeChambeau ranks first in ball striking. In other words, the three guys playing the best golf are exactly where they should be with two rounds remaining.
Elsewhere, Tiger Woods set a new Masters record making his 24th consecutive weekend in tournament competition, while the likes of Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm are simply trying to shoot up the leaderboard and bring home as much prize money as possible after playing their way out of contention through the first two rounds.
Watch the 2024 Masters live on CBS from 3-7 p.m. ET and streaming all day Saturday with Masters Live as we follow the best golfers in the world through Augusta National with Featured Groups, check in at the famed Amen Corner and see leaders round the turn on holes 15 & 16. It's been the sight of eagles in the past including Phil Mickelson en route to one of his three green jackets. The final pairing is now hitting their approach shots into the greens with Rickie Fowler sticking one close thanks to the slope.
The cat is purring around the practice area at Augusta National. We got just under an hour until he gets his third round underway alongside Tyrrell Hatton. Tiger is 1 over for the week and only seven strokes back, but he will need his iron play to cooperate today if he expects to push his name onto the first or second page of the leaderboard.
Hideki Matsuyama just turned in 3-under 33 showing those behind him what is possible on the first nine at Augusta National. It has generally been the easier side through the first two days as the second nine yields little birdie opportunities. If he can get through 10-2, Matsuyama may be able to get rolling into the mid 60s on the round.
Earlier in the week, Rory McIlroy said an ideal Augusta National for his game is firm, fast and with calm conditions. He will have a couple of those this weekend and with the best conditions of the week. After rounds of 71-77, he finds himself 10 strokes off the pace. 14 of his last 16 weekend rounds have been under par at the Masters.
The first three holes are yielding birdies as shown by Hideki Matsuyama and Rickie Fowler and will lead to a number of players getting off to good starts. Grab a couple early, take advantage of the three other par 5s and maybe pick off another one along the way and there is a path for someone in the earlier wave (maybe even closer to the leaders) to make a real move.
I'm not sure we are going to be getting the 75 course average that we got yesterday. While wind is still blowing, it is not as intense as yesterday and should lead to some better scores. You factor this in and the fact that those who were playing the worst golf are now gone and scoring should be better.
Moving Day at Augusta National has arrived! We have plenty of time before our leaders get going at 2:45 p.m. ET, but the morning viewing should provide some clue as to what they should expect. I am inclined to believe anyone at even par or better (sorry, Tiger) still has a chance to win this, but they must be perfect from here on out.

© 2004-2024 CBS Interactive.
