WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – The Hammond girls’ basketball team captured their 2nd straight New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class D title, beating Northville 54-34 with Landree Kenyon leading the way with 29 points and 20 rebounds in the win.
On the boys’ side, the Sackets Harbor Patriots came up inches short of capturing the boys’ state class D title in Glens Falls when Autin Griner’s 3-pointer just missed, giving North Warren a 68-66 win.
A pair of Copenhagen wrestlers won state titles on the mat in Albany. Chase Nevills won his 2nd straight state title, beating Chris Noto at 118 pounds, and teammate Tavian Camper won his 1st state title, beating Caden Bellis of Tioga 4-3 at 152 pounds.
On the girls’ side, Gouverneur’s Zoe Griffith captured the gold medal at the New York State Girls’ Invitational Wrestling Championships, beating Ava Guilmette of Shenendehowa in the 138-pound weight class.
In the college ranks, it was March Madness for a few local teams.
The Clarkson women’s hockey team punched their ticket to the NCAA tournament and advanced to the Final 4 where they lost to Ohio State 4-1. And the St. Lawrence women’s hockey team earned their 1st bid to the NCAA tournament since 2017, where they beat Penn State but lost to Wisconsin 4-nothing in the NCAA quarterfinals.
On the hardwood, the JCC women’s basketball team earned an at-large bid to the NJCAA Division 3 tournament in Rochester Minnesota, where they fell in the 5th place game to finish 24-5 on the season.
On the lacrosse field, the South Jeff girls made a run all the way to the state class D championship game, where they lost to Cold Spring Harbor 12-5.
On the track, Belleville Henderson student Kennady Billman, running for South Jeff, won the division 2 state title in the 200-meter dash at the state championships at Cicero North Syracuse High School.
And in the fall, Lisbon student Gretchen Braun, swimming for Canton, won a pair of state titles – capturing the 100 backstroke for a 2nd straight year and winning 100 freestyle.
Those are some of the many highlights from a 2024 that featured a number of great accomplishments from both teams and individuals locally.
