In its third game of the week, Warren’s girls basketball team couldn’t hold off visiting North East, falling 61-53 in double overtime on Saturday at Warren Area High School.
The Grape Pickers mounted a comeback after trailing by 10 in the first quarter and again by tying the score late in the fourth — trailing by 5 points with 31 seconds remaining — to send the game to overtime.
“When you play a game as long as this one, it really comes down to who can take care of the ball better and not make the mental mistakes, which typically result in turnovers,” said Warren coach Jenny Phillips. “We started the game really well; the girls were fired up and ready to play. North East capitalized on some of our turnovers, especially in their full-court press, and we started to fall apart a little. After halftime, we started to pull away, but again were plagued with turnovers. We need to be better at being mentally tough.”
Alyssa Farr hit three 3-pointers and had 11 points in a 19-9 Warren first quarter.
Ashley Hartner scored 8 points for North East in a 17-4 second quarter to turn the tide. The Grape Pickers (3-3) took a 26-23 lead into halftime.
Farr connected on two more 3-pointers in the second half and the Dragons had the lead late in the fourth before two late baskets. North East had a chance to win in OT, but missed two free throws.
Ten points between two overtime periods from Jalyssa Wicker lifted North East to the 8-point double-overtime victory.
Wicker finished the game with 18 points. Hartner added 15 points for the Grape Pickers.
Farr and Peyton Wotorson had 18 points each to lead Warren (3-3), and Emily Davidson added 10 points. Emma Roell had Warren’s only other field goals — a 3-pointer in the fourth and another 2 points in overtime.
“I have been telling the girls all season to just ‘flush it’ when they make mistakes,” said Phillips. “We can’t go back and change it, so move forward and make up for it on the other end of the floor. We just need to be better.”
